When people talk about a V6 engine or a V8 I  know what they are referring too but if I had to explain it to someone else, I could not do it.

I decided to delve into this a little deeper for all of us that really don’t have the slightest clue what a V6 or a V8 engine is or what the difference is.  Here is what I came up with:

The number of cylinders that an engine contains is an important factor in the overall performance of the engine. Each cylinder contains a piston that pumps inside of it and those pistons connect to and turn the crankshaft. The more pistons there are pumping, the more combustive events are taking place during any given moment. That means that more power can be generated in less time.  So I am gathering from this information that a V8 is more powerful than a V6.  I know 99% of you knew that…remember I am that 1% that is still trying to figure all this out.

What V6 means is that the engine has six cylinders arranged in a V – two banks of three.  What are the benefits of a V6 engine?  V6 engines have been the engine of choice for most automakers because they’re powerful and quiet but still light and compact enough to fit into most car designs.  Most people would agree that a V6 is better for gas mileage.
So obviously  a v8 is 8 cylinders in a V shape connected to the crankshaft-4 on each side.   V8′s are known for their power.

I found and talked to different people about what is better the V6 or the V8?  I felt that most people thought this was a tough question to answer as both of these engines have different merits. The general consensus was that  a v8 can  produce high amounts of horsepower and torque, especially when it is supercharged or turbo’d. The V8′s tend to use more gas than a v6.  V6′s are usually better on gas mileage, but tend to have less horsepower and torque.

I do not know if I helped anyone out with these very small explanations, but without being a mechanic myself, this is the best explanation I could find.  If anyone has any additional comments or insight into this, please share .  I would love to hear from you and so would other Kingsway Toyota customers.

    You’re not too far off, but times have changed. In older motors, displacement was the most significant relationship to horsepower… The larger the piston, the greater the displacement. At some point though, the pistons get too big for there to be efficient use of the fuel – no problem – just add more pistons! But, the more pistons you add, the more moving parts, the longer the crankshaft, the bigger the motor…. BUT, the biggest factor in old motors being V8′s, is they are naturally balanced… a V8 will always have one piston making power every 90 (360/8/2) degrees of rotation… where a V6 will have a piston making power every 120 degrees of rotation (360/6/2)…

    To make a V6 (or even a 4 cylinder) ‘smooth’ requires the use of balance shafts and counter balance shafts… which in the old days were not precise… so a V8 would always be ‘smoother’. Modern engineering has solved the balance issues of new motors – so it takes a more discerning person to notice a difference.

    For Toyota, the current generation of V6 in the 4runner has more power than the previous generation V8. Ford makes use of two turbos to get their newest V6 to have a higher towing rating than their biggest V8!

    That said – there is still ‘no replacement for displacement’. The 5.7l V8 in my Sequoia makes more power than any other Toyota motor… but trades some fuel economy to do so.

    For lots of people, the V6 is a good middle-ground… but look to the newest direct-injection 4 cylinders to make even more choices available…
